Expansion of Rice Cultivation and Its Impact on Underground Water Resources in Rohtak District (Haryana) From 1966-67 to 2010-2011

Haryana is known for its agriculture. However the region falls in the category of wheat growing area but with the help of Green Revolution technology package and perennial irrigation by canals & tube wells/bore wells the region has emerged as a rice cultivation area having very good production per hectare. Area of Rohtak District shows a tremendous growth of 16.96% from 1966-67 to 2010-11 in rice cultivation area compared with total crops area. But the other side of rice cultivation in such an artificial area of Rohtak District reflects a different mirror image, which includes the problems of water logging, increasing salinity level and also increasing the percentage level of fluoride ion from permissible limit of 1.5 mg/lit to 1.86 mg/lit in areas / block which dominate in rice cultivation. Method of moving average has been used to show the trend of rice cultivation.
