Reasons of Migration from Hills to Plains: A Case Study of Out-migration from Himachal Pradesh

Archana Sharma

Abstract

This research paper is an attempt to study the reasons of out migration from a hill state to the plains taking Himachal Pradesh as the case study. Census data for the census years 1991 and 2001 have been analysed to find out the reasons associated with out migration. An effort has also been made to find the variation of reasons of migration amongst males and females. It has been found that male migration was driven by economic factors whereas familial/social factors were prime determinants for relocation of females.
