Irrigation Technique During Harappan Period in Sutlej-Yamuna Divide

Sunil Kumar

Abstract

In our region Rabi and Kharif crops were utilized during Harappan period. The agriculture cycle needed monsoon rains like today. But if the land is not artificially irrigated, the rainfall may be insufficient to make the plants germinate (kharif crop) until late June, by which time they cannot mature before the fall frosts destroy them. Crop failure in non-irrigated areas for this and other reasons is frequent, and thus there is a strong incentive to irrigate crops.
