Environment and Economic Development in India: Sustainable Development



India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. It has recorded the highest growth rates in the mid 2000's. But this increase in growth rate fails to reflect the true cost of development. Due to neglect of environmental issues, India has to incur huge losses in terms of money and depletion of resources. Polluting the atmosphere especially in terms of air and water quality has been one of the most important negative externality of industrial development. Even the gains resulting from success of ever increasing food production over the span of last four decades have not without their consequent environmental and social cost.
