Ch. Pranalika, I. Praveen Kumar Reddy

Abstract

Concrete is the most extensively used construction material in the world and is the 2nd most consumed substance in the world behind water. Mostly concrete made of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is used in the construction. Cement is produced from lime and clay in wet and dry process, a large amount of carbon dioxide is also produced in the manufacture of cement and concrete. On the other hand, the depletion of natural resources is causing a severe effect to the environment. One of the efficient method to conserve the natural resources and reduce the environmental impact is to use supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) like fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, rice husk ash, metakaolin, limestone powder, micro-silica etc.
