Provenance and sedimentological studies of shallow offshore sediment, offshore depobelt, niger delta

Abstract

Representative ditch cuttings samples were collected from two wells in the shallow offshore part of the eastern Niger Delta basin at fifty (50) meters intervals which fall within the Agbada Formation. These samples were used to investigate aspect of provenance of sediments. The granulometric analysis indicate that the sandstone vary from moderately sorted to well sorted, medium grain sand, nearly symmetrical to positively skewed and kurtosis distribution range from mesokurtic to very leptokurtic. The grain size distribution values of the sandstone were plotted using the histogram, Ogive curve and hivarate plots which  shows predominantly bimodal distribution, indicating a multiple sources of river deposits, also sediments are of fluvial origin, that is; continental depositional environment.
