Abstract

This Paper presents a novel methodology for single switch and double switches open-circuit fault Detection, Identification in Induction motors employed in ac motor drive systems are normally fed by voltage-source inverters (VSI). This type of drive system is sensitive to different kinds of faults. When one of these faults does occur the drive operation has to be stopped for a non-programmed maintenance schedule. The cost of this schedule can be high, and this justifies the development of fault diagnostic methods. In this paper, a simple diagnostic and detection method that allows the real-time detection and localization of inverter IGBT open-circuit faults using just the motor phase currents using just the motor phase currents, is presented. The stage is determined by recalculating the current vector rotating angle. The d-and q-axis current repetitive distortions are applied to the detection of faulty switches due to its simplicity and fair robustness, while the faulty stages are used for the identification of faulty switches. A model of the system is built using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results are presented showing the diagnostic method performance under distinct operating conditions.
